What Would It Cost to Build the Graphite Study Bookcase Wall?
The Graphite Study backdrop shows a floor-to-ceiling built-in bookcase painted deep graphite, with two bays, warm LED light under every shelf and a full library of books. We wanted to know what it would actually take to build the part your camera sees — so we priced it out, item by item.

What we priced
Only the area your camera sees: 76 × 43 in (about 193 × 109 cm), the same size as the backdrop. That whole area is bookcase: two bays split by a center upright, ten shelves (counting the top and bottom ones just outside the frame), a painted back panel, and about 24 ft of warm-white LED light under the shelves.

Labor and design
Labor is the only part that really varies, so we show the full market range and use the middle of it for the comparison. Hourly rates come from Angi's 2026 cost guides for carpenters doing custom shelving ($45–$110 per hour) and interior designers ($100–$500 per hour).

Why include design? A wall like this doesn't build itself from a photo. Someone has to turn the idea into measurements, a materials list and a plan a carpenter can follow. If you'd rather design it yourself, subtract the design line.

What we left out
We kept the estimate conservative. It does not include the books, globe, lanterns, geode, hourglass, lamp, vases or bookends, aluminum LED channels (the seamless tape can sit in a routed groove), an electrician (the LED tape plugs into a standard outlet), sales tax, delivery, or tool rental. Adding any of them would only raise the number.
What a backdrop is — and isn't
A QuickStudio backdrop is made for the camera. It's a matte, dye-sublimation print on wrinkle-resistant polyester, calibrated for a camera about 4.5 ft away. In person, it's printed fabric, not a built-in bookcase. On a video call, it gives you the look of the built wall without building it.

Could I build it myself?
Doing it yourself removes design and labor, leaving about $453 in materials — plus the tools, the skills to build and paint cabinetry cleanly, and the time.
Is the backdrop a good option if I rent?
Yes. Nothing is built into the wall, painted or wired. The backdrop hangs on the included removable hooks and comes with you when you move.
Can I take it with me when I travel?
Yes. Take it down, fold it into a bag with the spare mounting squares from the box, and hang it again at a hotel, a beach house or a client's office — same office, wherever you take the call.
Can I change the look later?
A built-in bookcase stays the way it was built. With backdrops, you can switch to a completely different office in minutes.
